Things to do in Rome

I finally made it to the capital city in Italy. I have flown to Rome six times as Cabin Crew on our short haul trips which where there and backs. So I was happy that finally I could step off the aircraft and explore this beautiful city!

I would highly recommend staying in Air Bnb as you can save lots of money and be in the heart of Rome. Everything is close together and it is pretty easy to get around by walking.

There is so much to do In Rome, I would recommend staying for a few days to hit all the tourist spots and to enjoy all the food.

Hop On Hop Off Bus

I wanted to make sure that I could see all the main tourist spots in Rome and so I booked the Hop On Hop Off bus to make sure I would not miss anything! It was good however I did not realise how easy it was to get around the city so I would recommend doing a walking tour or using the metro for €7 for the day or even the buses for €2 for the day.

Trevi Fountain

Where wishes come true!

The tradition is to throw in three coins into the fountain and make three wishes.

  1. To return to Rome

  2. To fall in love

  3. To marry the person of your dreams

To make the occasion extra special visit the little rooftop at the Relais Fontana Di Trevi Hotel.

Colosseum and Ancient Roman Forum

When in Rome definitely arrange a tour to see the sites and learn about the history.

The Roman Forum, known as Forum Romanum in Latin, was a site located at the center of the ancient city of Rome and the location of important religious, political and social activities. Historians believe people first began publicly meeting in the open-air Forum around 500 B.C., when the Roman Republic was founded (1).

The colosseum is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world today, despite its age.(2) The colosseum is part of the new seven wonders of the world. I would highly recommend a tour as it is great to hear about the history of the gladiators.

Trastevere

This is my favourite place to go for a night out. They have so many nice restaurants, wine bars and boutiques. They also have live shows and entertainment around the area. It definitely brings in a younger crowd.

Campo De' Fiori

Make sure you check out the Campo De Fiori market open everyday in the morning. Do not forget to grab some lemoncello!

Piazza Venezia

The home of the Altar of the Fatherland and the headquarters for the Italian government.

A rooftop I would recommend that gives you the best view is Oro Bistrot.

Spanish Steps

This marks the widest and longest staircase in Europe. It is best to visit the steps in the spring/summer when they have all the flowers out. Around the area are many high end shops and places to dine.

Pantheon

This former Roman Temple built in 609 AD is free to visit at certain times in the day.

Vatican Museum

The Vatican Museum is the epitome of Roman, Baroque, and Renaissance architecture. It is home to one of the greatest masterpieces of history - Michelangelo's fresco at the Sistine Chapel.(3)

Villa Borghese

Located on Pincian Hill, it features a number of buildings, museums, a lake, fountains and beautiful green meadows.

Tonnarello

Another great restaurant, if you can make a booking it will save you lots of time as there will be lengthy queues. Situated in the best place for nightlife (Trastevere).

Osteria Da Fortunata

This is definitely my favourite place to eat PASTA! It is all homemade and they make it in front of you in the restaurant. This restaurant was recommended by locals so I knew this would be a hot spot

Other areas to visit:

  • Piazza Navona

  • Castel Sant'Angelo

  • St. Peter's Basilica

  • Circus Maximus

  • Monti

and many more...
